How UET Lahore GPA and CGPA are calculated

UET Lahore grades theory courses relatively. Grades are awarded against the class's performance using a normal distribution rather than fixed percentage cut-offs, which is why the marks behind a B in one course rarely match the marks behind a B in another. This calculator therefore starts from the letter grade you were actually awarded.

The scale itself is the standard eleven-grade HEC table on .67/.33 increments: A (4.00), A- (3.67), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B- (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C- (1.67), D+ (1.33), D (1.00) and F (0.00), capped at a maximum GPA of 4.00.

UET's engineering programmes mix heavy theory courses with one-credit labs, so credit hours matter more here than course counts. Add one semester at a time, one row per course, and you get each semester's SGPA alongside the running CGPA up to that semester.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

An F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Worked Examples

Example 1: a typical engineering semester

17 credit hours mixing theory courses with a one-credit lab.

Engineering Mechanics, 3 CH, A (4.00)3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Circuit Analysis, 4 CH, A- (3.67)4 × 3.67 = 14.68
Calculus, 3 CH, B+ (3.33)3 × 3.33 = 9.99
Applied Chemistry, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Islamic Studies, 3 CH, C+ (2.33)3 × 2.33 = 6.99
Circuits Lab, 1 CH, A (4.00)1 × 4.00 = 4.00
Total grade points12.00 + 14.68 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 6.99 + 4.00 = 56.66
Total credit hours3 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 17
ResultSGPA = 56.66 ÷ 17 = 3.33

Example 2: why the four-credit course dominates

Swapping the 4-credit A- for a B, against swapping the 1-credit lab A for a B.

4 CH dropped from A- to B(3.67 − 3.00) × 4 = 2.68 points lost
1 CH dropped from A to B(4.00 − 3.00) × 1 = 1.00 point lost
Effect on a 17 CH semester2.68 ÷ 17 = 0.16 vs 1.00 ÷ 17 = 0.06
ResultThe heavy theory course moves your SGPA nearly three times as much as the lab

University of Engineering & Technology Lahore Grading Scale

UET Lahore letter grades and their grade points. There is no marks column: theory courses are graded on a curve, so the percentage behind a letter shifts with each class's distribution rather than sitting at a fixed threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?

Because UET grades theory courses relatively, using a normal distribution across the class. There is no fixed percentage that maps to a letter, so the same score can produce different grades in different courses or sessions. Entering the letter from your result card is the only accurate route.

How do one-credit labs affect my GPA?

Less than you would expect. Because the average is weighted by credit hours, a one-credit lab carries a quarter of the weight of a four-credit theory course. A strong lab grade nudges your SGPA; the heavy theory courses are what actually decide a semester.

Does an F count towards my UET CGPA?

Yes, from both sides. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator. A failed four-credit course in a 17-credit semester costs roughly 0.9 of SGPA even if everything else went well.

What is the minimum CGPA I need?

2.00 for the award of a bachelor's degree, which is also the threshold for remaining in good standing. Falling below it puts you on probation, so the practical target sits comfortably above 2.00 rather than at it.

How should I handle a repeated course?

Enter only the attempt that counts on your transcript. Where a repeat replaces the earlier grade under your department's rules, work from the replacement and leave the original out; entering both would double-count the credit hours and distort the CGPA.

Is the curve the same in every section?

Not necessarily. Relative grading is applied per section against that section's own distribution, so two sections of the same course taught by different instructors can produce different cut-offs. That is the practical reason UET students compare letter grades rather than percentages.
